1. Knowing The Seasons Of Mauritius
This is the first question that is going to pop up in your head.
The summers here usually last from October to April. The average temperature is 76 degrees Fahrenheit or around 25 degrees Celsius. Starting from December and going till March, you are going to see the wettest days here.
The winters here are going to be from May to September. The average temperature is somewhere close to 70 degrees Fahrenheit or 21 degrees Celsius. There is going to be a lot of wind and it is also a great time for water sports.
2. What Are You Going To Eat And Drink?
Mauritius has a very colouful and vivid history. It has influence from all over the subcontinent including India, Africa, and China. You are also going to find a very heavy streak of French culture in many of its delicacies. The local street vendors are always going to be easily reachable. The sea food here is extraordinary and some of the popular preparations include their own version of falafels, roti, dholl puris, and more!
3. Always Prefer Electric Bikes
If you really want to explore the real Mauritius and the local culture, it is better to get yourself a couple of electric bikes. You will find several different routes leading you to beautiful local beaches, scenic views, waterfalls, and also great food. It is also a great way to explore the real history, culture, and heritage of Mauritius. Historical places in particular become far more accessible if you are on an electric bike. If you still feel a little nervous or clueless, the local guides are going to help you out. The hotel reception can fix you up with a reliable local tour manager or their in-house tour guides almost instantly.
4. Do You Want To Rent A Car?
Some tourists prefer to rent a car to explore the Mauritian landscape which is also a good idea. The speed limits are usually 40 km/hour in towns and 60 km/hour outside. If you are on the highway, you can go as high as 110 km/hour. The roads are in a very good condition and Google Maps works just perfectly. It is going to take you to all the popular attractions that you never want to miss. The cities are not that crowded which means it will be easy for you to navigate around. The cost of a taxi on the other hand is going to be a little variable because they are not regulated. It can cost you somewhere between 800 to 1,000 MUR.
5. Traffic Does Get Crazy Here
Just a side note, traffic can get crazy in Mauritius. For example, it might take you somewhere between 1 and 2 hours to reach from one corner of the island to another. The density of vehicles is very variable and the more tourists there are, the more difficult it is going to be for obvious reasons. However, the locals are always going to exaggerate a little. The traffic can get a little intimidating but it is just like any other city around the world.
6. Yes, Drinking Water Is Safe
People travelling from the West or "developed countries" are highly skeptical of whether the water in such far of places is safe to drink or not. So yes, locals drink tap water practically everyday but it is not recommended for outsiders or travellers. The immunity differs obviously and so does bodily reactions to local tap water. It is advised to keep water bottles with you whenever you are travelling or exploring the Mauritian landscape.
7. Snorkeling, Diving, Waterfalls, Oceans, And More
Of course, how can we forget this part? The natural wonders, adventures, and sports activities Mauritius is famous for! Do not forget to indulge in diving, snorkeling, helicopter rides, and any other activity that you are interested in. The waters are crystal clear. The sky is always brilliantly blue. You are going to have a wonderful time in this paradise of an island.
